CMS Physical Education Grading Policy

Students are evaluated on effort, cooperation, and sportsmanship on a daily basis.  Students can earn or lose up to 10 points per day of PE or Health class.  The total number of possible points that can be earned in a six-week period is 10 times the number of days of PE/Health in those six weeks.  For example, if there is 30 days of PE/Health classes in a six weeks period the total number of possible points are 300 (30 X 10).  300 to determine the PE/Health grade then divide the total number of points a student actually earns during those 30 days.

Points earned in PE each day are determined according to the following:

* 1-5 points are earned for cooperation and sportsmanship.  This includes properly dressing out, being on time, following all the safety rules, and displaying good sportsmanship.

* 1-5 points are earned for your effort.  These are called “participation points” and are based on a student participating to the best of his or her ability.  These points are not performance based, but rather based on one’s personal best.  In other words, participating based on one’s own potential at that time, not someone else’s performance criteria.

Please note that if you are absent you must do work outside of school to make up for the 10 points lost.  An example would be to do 30 minutes of housework or yard work for each day absent.  It is your responsibility to see your PE teacher following an absence to get a “PE Make-up Form”. Forms are available online for your convenience.  Go to www.mcps.org/cms   The form is under the “Athletics” button.  After completing the work, have a parent sign it before turning it in.  Students have 5 days following an absence to turn in the make-up work.

One final issue about grading is our policy regarding “dressing out”.  Because of personal hygiene and safety, we require all students to dress out for PE class.  If you do not have a gym uniform on a given day, you must borrow clean gym clothes from your PE teacher.  You will lose “cooperation points”, but you will not lose your “effort points”.  Refusing to dress out or borrow PE gym clothes is considered being in defiance of school rules and will be referred to the administration for discipline. It also results in the loss of all ten (10) PE points for the day.  Just like in sports, where an athlete cannot participate without the proper uniform, so it is for activity in physical education classes.  If a student cannot participate for an extended period of time, an alternative activity for a grade may be assigned.  In some cases participation is possible on a limited basis.

Please sign and return this portion of the paper to your PE teacher for his/her records.  We do this to insure that a parent has seen and read this information and understands the policies that determine a student’s PE/Health grade.  You may keep the top portion of this policy for your reference.
